2017 in Review

It's that time of year again where we look back at the year and the games we played. Once again I'm going to be talking about the games that I played on my own time. This is not a retrospective on the podcast nor is it a review of games that launched this year. Although, this time all the games on here did launch this year with one exception. This article is about games that I personally played. This year I'm adding a category, but we're going to get to that in a minute.  Onward!

Episode 209: Harvest Moon 64

Sometimes, you just need to kick back and let the turnips grow.  Specifically, when you have no other crops or animals, and have really exhausted all the stuff to do around town.  There's always the bar, though, not to mention a pile of fun townsfolk to hang out with.  Look into your heart... become the legendary philanderer farmer you were meant to be!

More downloads than a barn full of cash cows.

Show Notes

(01:00) Geremy can’t even go 20 seconds without referencing someone funnier than himself.

Episode 208: Aero the Acro-bat

There are certainly worse tales to be based on a circus environment.  This game has no tragic backstories to speak of, but there are some evil clowns.  The more we've talked about this game, the more tenuous connections we've made to Batman.  At any rate, follow a competent circus performer as he performs... in the circus.  I suppose there's also the part where he fights off hordes of evil clowns while an audience watches, but, really, that's just the price of admission.

Episode 206: Super Return of the Jedi

There's not a whole lot "super" about this game, but that, combined with "star", is the adjective that it gets.  Join us as we put to rest an epic trilogy, as Luke, Leia, and Chewie flail their way through an attempt to recreate the movie.  Also, space pterodactyls!

Sneak Peek!? It's a Gundam!

Hey, everyone!  If you're a fan of being a nerd, and also maybe anime, then we've got a treat for you!  From the creators of Last Time on Video Games, here's sneak peek at another podcast about old stuff!  Specifically, this one's about an older anime: Gundam Seed!  This is the first issue of our episode-by-episode review of the show.  It only gets better as it goes on, and we think it's a lot of fun!

Episode 205: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

During intense chakra training, Fi sensed a disturbance in the ninja world.  Seeing no other choice, she chose a hero from another world and bestowed upon him sweet ninja powers.  Also, she may or may not have orchestrated the abduction of that hero's girlfriend so he'd have incentive to deal with Ninja World's big bad.  That's the plot of this game, +/- 5%.  Join our not-Goku on a journey to the land of sweet ninjas, presumably laying somewhere to the west.

Hiden no justu: Daunrodo no Yari!

Show Notes

(02:45) Zach (and others) have been playing Xenoverse 2.

Episode 204: Resident Evil

When too many people go missing, it's time to call in the experts.  When the experts go missing, it's time to call in... S.T.A.R.S. ... !  Join Jill and Chris as they explore a mansion infested with badness.  A sort of evil, one might say, in residence at said mansion.  Fight through undead abominations, tricky puzzles, and pre-rendered backgrounds resulting in clunky camera angles to save your friends... and yourself!  Though, there's less fighting and more puzzle solving, so maybe you'll want to bring some quick quips so you can keep up with Guybrush.

Here's a download.  It might be handy if you, a master of downloading, take it with ya.

Show Notes

(01:00) Thanks Audience!  This Podcast was almost a Jill Sandwich!

(18:15) The Super NES Mini, next to a copy of Persona 5 and a Nintendo 3DS for scale.

(22:00) Happy Death Day!  It's genuinely good!

(27:45) Run Like Hell is an Xbox/PS2 title similar to Resident Evil.  Old enough nobody remembers it but not quite old enough to be of interest to this podcast.

Episode 203: Kirby's Dream Course

Answering the age old question "what if we put our ball-like character into a situation where his ball-ness is a useful feature", this week's game is a unique twist on minigolf.  As Kirby mysterious maneuvers himself around the world, discover a host of small mechanics that eventually interlock into some truly bizarre courses.  Just kill all your golf-foes in the correct order, and save... Dreamland?  Your putting average?

A hole-in-one here requires a trickshot off the download.

Show Notes

(03:00) Tyler is playing Splatoon again.

(03:30) TSM still employs both Leffin and ZERO, though ZERO has been less dominant in recent years than Geremy implies.

(06:00) Zach has been playing League of Legends, because it is a time of year.

Episode 202: Castlevania Dracula X

The last game of our remake-themed month, this one's... special.  Once again, Ryu Anime Belmont dons his dramatic gloves and whip and sets out to save the inexplicably ninja Maria, who refuses to help him this time.  This is, really, a wholly different game than Rondo of Blood, but does it hold up on its own?

Whip right to that download.

Episode 201: Mario 64 DS

What do you get when you try to control a game originally meant for an analog stick with a d-pad?  Basically the same game, but somehow a lot worse.  Maybe it's because the whole thing smells oddly of garlic; Wario is just too well rendered in this game.  Join us as we hop, skip, and constipatedly hover over the familiar environs of Peach's Castle's magic paintings.

Episode 200: Well, That Was Anticlimactic [Adventure Island]

We seem to be running into a lot of these "we didn't get the license so let's just call it something else" games in our queue recently.  Journey back with us through the dimensional wormhole that was the NES/Master System war, and witness the birth of a hero.  Golf Guy, the only Guy whose super-thing is Golf, sets out on a quest to avenge his parents after they were killed by a bad slice.  He and his companion, Caddy Kid, will stop at nothing to end the golf-themed threats of The Eagle!  What do you mean that's not the plot?

Also, Episode 200!

Episode 199: Zach Played the Game More Than Geremy [Metal Slug X]

Never before have we seen this much metal in so few slugs!  Actually, thinking on it, there aren't actually metal slugs in this game; they all seem to be energy pellets of some sort.  At any rate, there are now working graphics, tons of "vehicles", and a number of playable characters.  The same Metal Slug quirkiness, now sequelier and more functional!

Episode 198: The More Missiles Upgrade Gives You More Missiles [Metroid Zero Mission]

Samus is back!  To celebrate that (though mostly because of this month's theme), we're revisiting the first real Metroid remake: Zero Mission.  The team learned a bunch of things from Super Metroid and haphazardly applied them to the original game.  What results is an odd, but relatively solid, of bad map design and progression and reasonable controls.  Fun!

Episode 197: ADRIAAAN Is In Another Castle [Secret Command]

There comes a time in every actions star's career when they get to be a big enough name, that someone is bound to make a videogame based on the movie they were in.  In order to get the jump on other developers, some companies decided to just make the game, and apply licensing post-hoc.  As it happens, this tends to not make for the greatest games.  So, run through the jungle with us as definitely-not-Mr.-Stallone wades through hordes of bland and forgettable enemies to... do a thing?  Maybe aliens?

Our downloads take no prisoners.

Episode 196: Why Do You Keep Hitting Yourself? [Final Fantasy 2]

Finally, the ultimate entry in an unfortunately truncated series!  Oh, nevermind.  There are apparently, like, 20 more of these floating about.  Oh, well.  Join a team of beleaguered youths fighting against a dystopian empire in order to save their ragtag rebellion, which is conveniently based out of well-known and well-funded country of sympathizers.  This time, your stats are directly affected by your actions, so that sets it apart a bit from other entries in the series.  Grinding has rarely been so entertaining!

(14:30) Gunpoint is witty, intriguing, and challenging.

(16:45) "Tactical Stealth Operations"

(24:30) Monado boiz

(25:30) Brave Exvius is apparently the mobile FF game.  Also, DO NOT play the phone port of FFII.  It's garbage, and whoever ported it should feel bad.

(30:00) We spend a bit going over the GBA/NES differences, such as how stats are not inversely tied to each other in newer versions.

(38:00) Gordon.  Also, teaching Tyler the true meaning of shanghai.  More ProZD surprisingly relevant to Leila.

Episode 195: The Least Dangerous Game [Landstalker]

Some treasure hunters are legendary.  Some steal phoenix feathers to try to resurrect their long-dead girlfriends.  Others think that all artifacts belong in museums.  Some... use all their money to pursue a vague hint of some nebulously defined treasure.  And hop awkwardly to get there.  Summon an eagle (components: 5000 gold pieces) and fly to adventure!  Or mostly just falling down holes a lot and trying to get over that danged pit.

Episode 194: He is Turok [Turok]

He is Turok, and I am very late with this episode.  I'm sorry, folks!  I don't have a good excuse other than laziness and being tired, but here we are... finally.  Enjoy some dinos!

The world has always been protected.  Guarded against dinosaurs, aliens, and random crusaders I guess.  We are defended... by (the?) Turok.  He's adept at running way fast all the time and also shooting dudes, which are, I suppose, the only real qualifications you really need.

Episode 193: Muscle Men in Space [Cho Aniki]

When the galaxy's best body build comes a-knockin', there's only one thing to do: team up with two weird angel children and send your own body building... flying... mutant... guys? No one builds a protein plant out of Earth, even if they do have great abs! Defend important areas, like downtown streets, a football stadium I guess?, and the moon for some reason. All in the name of amazing muscles.

Episode 192: Cool Ferrari Physics [Another World]

One night, a terrible particle accelerator-based accident occurs!  Leaving his Ferrari behind, incredibly cool guy Lester Chaykin ends up, presumably in a galaxy far, far away.  Taking after the Indiana Jones school of Ph.D.s, he set out on a grand adventure to find out where he is and where he should be.  Unfortunately, he's not nearly as good at it as ol' Indy, and he dies... a lot.  Then gets captured.  Then almost dies, but eventually there's a space dragon, so it all works out.  Fun!(?)

Some times, one hit isn't enough.  You just have to do it again.  So, you take a sip of that sweet flying ship, and you're off.  Trippy landscapes and odd warp zones await you, and you can swear you have wings.  Which you do, because you're a sentient ship pod with feet.  Also, there are wood totems and weird spinny clam things to shoot, so you had best be off to do whatever it is winged/legged ships do.

Famous for destroying hands and friendships, our first look at Mario Party was made infinitely better by actually getting together and playing it.  Featuring... adjectiveless minigames and actually amusingly themed boards, this game steps in to fill the niche of people who want to hang out and play video games, but nothing too serious, right?

Hey fans, apologies for the lack of content recently, snow, busy schedules and work have kept us from recording lately.  We promise a new episode next week, featuring Mario Party 2, the classic game where you roll virtual dice and yell at your friends!  In the mean time, we've managed to record a Let's Play of the game to capture some multi player magic, hopefully that will hold you over until next week when we release our full episode!

Episode 186: As Exciting As A Post Office [Postal 2]

When everyone around you is a terrible person, sometimes the only option is to respond in kind.  Or patiently wait in line, but that takes forever.  In a game whose tagline was ""Remember, it's only as violent as you are!", it's really only as violent as you are patient.  Seeming to take most of its cues from the, at the time, much more controversial "ban all video games" political scene, this game attempts to poke fun at people whose morals need to be applied to everyone but themselves and...  Well, that's it, really.  Everyone else is collateral.  Have fun!(?)

Downloads are probably more effective silencers than cats.

Zach's "Mostly" full thoughts on Breath of the Wild

So this week on the Podcast we talked Breath of the Wild and I went on what could only be charitably called a Semi-coherent rant on the game. Rather obviously the whole of my personal feelings on the game didn't come through so I'd like to take this time to go more into depth as to why I think it is the single most overrated game I've ever played.

Nothing says "thrilling mech warfare" like building a single, non-reusable launch pad for a mech, then mostly letting it sit there while you pepper your opponent with missiles.  That said, upgrading to a shiny golden form is definitely on the thrilling side of the spectrum, so it might balance out in the end.  Join us in our fight to stop a vague villainous threat from being menacing in our general direction, and see whether our AA screen is tight enough.

Episode 176: Bubbling Through Your Own Shield [Bubble Bobble & Space Invaders]

What do side-scrolling aliens and bubble-spewing dragosaurs have in common?  No one's really sure, but there must be something, because the same company made games about both and this episode is about both, too.  Illuminati confirmed!  Also... triangle ships, I guess?  Anyway, evidence abounds, just as we'll be rebounding off of various obstacles on our quest to turn our space ship back into a real boy.

Show Notes

(01:30) Mildly NSFW, Charisma Potion.  It's pretty good.

(03:30) Duel Links: Tyler tested, Geremy disapproved.

(13:00) Ignoring the "hinges on lack of ditto" thing, it's a pretty good theory.

(19:30) Keep it klassy, Kombat.

(29:30) Because the people who made this show were dorks.

(32:30) Invading the ranks.

(40:00) Taito: And now for something completely different.

(45:45) I dunno, this doesn't sound like I'm fighting to redeem my humanity.

(47:00) Bust-A-Move is definitely the match 3 game we were thinking about.  Also, ranking the Bubbs and the Bobbs.

Next time on Last Time, Metal Marines, the lost episode returned!
