Of Browsers and MIME Types

So, it's been brought to my attention that the download link "doesn't work" correctly.  The symptoms of this are clicking the link and being redirected to a new, mostly blank page that tries to play the file.  Sadly, there's nothing I can do about this directly.  Your browser associates a program of some sort with MP3 files.

This association, for those of you who want to know, is called a MIME type.

In order to stop this from happening with our download, and any other direct link to an MP3, you can disable your browser's association with that file type.  In Firefox, this is done by going to Tools -> Options -> Applications, typing MP3 into the search bar, and telling it to either ask you what to do or just saving it.  IE does not have an association by default, and will ask you to download it.  Sadly, Chrome does not currently allow you to edit MIME type associations.

The way around doing anything at all, however, is to right click the link, and choose something to the effect of "Save link as..."

Knowledge is power!
